How Acne Scarring is generally graded:

• Grade 1: Macular scarring (or flat scarring) is characterized by flat areas of increased or decreased pigmentation that is visible from distances greater than 50cm.
• Grade 2: Defined as a mild disease, these scars are visible at distances of less than 50 centimeters. Their appearance can be covered by make-up. Examples include mild rolling acne scars.
• Grade 3: Defined as moderate disease, grade 3 acne scars are visible at distances of 50cm or greater. They are not easily covered with make-up. Stretching the skin can flatten the scar. Examples include more significant rolling scars, shallow boxcar scars, and mild to moderate hypertrophic scars.
• Grade 4: These scars are as severe as Grade 3 scars but the scarring is not flattened by stretching the skin. Examples include deep divots, severe boxcar scars, ice pick scars, and hypertrophic keloid scarring.
