Chemical Peels Sydney
Chemical peels have proven themselves to be an effective means of reducing skin blemishes and wrinkles.
Chemical peels come in a variety of forms from the daily mild at home grade, to the weekly or biweekly medical spa, or to the occasional extreme medical doctor grade solutions.
Firstly let’s rule out the doctor level ‘deep peel’, as they have long downtime/healing periods, and are done under anaesthesia in a surgical and sterile environment to prevent infection. Clinical Aestheticians/Dermal Therapists provide superficial, light and some medium level peels.

Chemical peels are safe, effective and a very popular cosmetic procedure. Depending on your skin type and the preparation used, chemical peels can offer a range of benefits including cleansing, rejuvenating, anti-acne, regenerating, brightening, reducing blemishes, anti-wrinkle and normalising effects.
Commonly bought products tend to be the ‘at home’ over the counter grade products often called: ‘home peel’ or ‘exfoliation-micro bead’. A very high proportion of these products carry buffers in them to prevent ‘at home’ reactions or adverse outcomes. With the amount of buffers in the products, you won’t see very much in terms of actual chemexfoliation. You barely feel any skin response and often they are no more than a bunch of fragrances with petroleum based ingredients that can actually make your skin worse over time.
Some exfoliation products can actually cause breakouts.
In-clinic peels
The mechanism of action of chemical peels, also known as acid peels or acids, consists of removing the outer layers of the skin in order to stimulate its natural regenerative abilities. Peelings loosen connections between skin cells, which results in exfoliation of the skin’s outer layers.
A chemical peel is a procedure that exfoliates the outer layers of the skin. It loosens connections between skin cells, resulting in exfoliation of the outer layers, and also stimulates healthy new regeneration of the skin. The procedure usually involves application of a chemical solution to clean and dry skin, followed by neutralisation using an acid-neutraliser solution.
The type, concentration, and pH of the preparation used determine which effect is produced. These are:
- surface treatments–which work within the epidermis,
- medium depth–reaching the upper layers of skin (the dermis),
- deep–which affects the deeper layers of the dermis.
- A light or often called ‘lunchtime’ chemical peel provides subtle improvement over time and is often done in a series. The outermost layer of skin is removed. This choice may be best if you have fine wrinkling, acne, uneven skin colouring or dry, rough sun-damaged skin to help promote a healthy glow. Recovery from this type of peel may be within hours to a few days but with little to no down time.
- A medium chemical peel gives your skin a smooth, fresh look. The outermost layer and the upper part of your middle skin layer are removed. This choice may be best if you have uneven or moderate skin discolouring, age spots, acne scarring or fine-to-moderate wrinkles. Recovery from this type of peel may take a week or more and require some down time.
- A deep chemical peel produces the most dramatic results. This chemical penetrates down to the lower middle layer of your skin. Recovery time is longer with a deep peel. This choice may be best if you have moderate lines and wrinkles, extensive sun-damaged skin, deep acne scars, blotchy skin, and/or precancerous growths called actinic keratosis. A deep chemical peel requires pretreatment for up to eight weeks. Your doctor will provide specific instructions. A deep chemical peel is a one-time only treatment if applied to your face and does have significant down time.
There are many skin peels for different types of skin, including:
- Acne—products containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid, or benzoyl peroxide—contain substances with cleansing, normalising and antibacterial properties.
- Mature—regenerative, rejuvenating, and anti-wrinkle effect.
- Discolouration—Active brightening ingredients even out skin tone and reduce discolouration.
- Telangiectasia—Exfoliate skin gently while protecting delicate blood vessels.
A maintenance peel is suitable for all skin types, including those with no visible aesthetic problems. It helps to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin by stimulating natural skin revitalisation processes.
Depending on the type of chemical peel, you can achieve results such as:
- reduction of acne (rosacea, vulgaris)
- removal of blackheads
- cleansing the skin
- eliminating the discolouration
- reduction of sebum
- moisturising and smoothing the skin
- revitalisation, refreshing of the skin
- elimination of wrinkles and scars
- improving the density and quality of the skin
- brightening the area under the eyes
- reduction of erythema and strengthening of blood vessels
- stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in the skin
