Preparing for a Chemical Peel
A chemical peel is usually a safe procedure when performed by an experienced therapist like we are at LaserALL. Our staff members are highly trained and experienced in providing chemical peels to our clients, ensuring that they get the best results possible.
While rare, infection and scarring are risks associated with chemical peeling treatments. There are no special preparations needed before the procedure. However, patients should know about several recommendations. Before the procedure, you should:
- Avoid tanning and direct sun exposure for two weeks before each treatment.
- Avoid exfoliation 2 weeks prior to treatment.
- Apply topical products (such as peel prep as instructed before treatment to prepare your skin.
- Do not use any products containing retinoids (such as tretinoin) one to two weeks before treatment, unless your physician tells you differently.
- If you are prescribed oral antibiotics or antiviral medications, begin taking them at least 24 hours before your chemical peel.
- Areas to be treated with the peel must be clear of open sores, lesions, or skin infections.
- Use the brightening peel booster that is recommended.
Based on your skin type and the type of Peel you receive, our dermal clinician may recommend a home care regimen that includes the use of cosmeceutical and sun protection.
How is the right kind of peel chosen for each patient’s needs?
Before any treatment, we ask each client to fill out an extensive questionnaire that allows our therapist to choose the appropriate therapy and prepare for it with advanced treatments.There are a variety of chemical peels, each composed of a mixture of several different exfoliating substances with specific properties that can be used in the care of a specific skin type to achieve specific results.
Day of Peel:
If you like to face rinse in the morning, rinse your face after you brush your teeth. Do not cleanse your face with a cleansing product, as this can strip away your skin’s natural oils. Apply sunscreen only; do not use moisturiser on top of sunscreen.
The procedure:
- For chemical peels, the client’s face is thoroughly cleaned to remove any oil or products that may interfere with the chemicals in the peel. If your face is being treated, your eyes may be covered with gauze or goggles to protect them, and your hair may be pulled back from your face.
- After a skin care specialist has recommended a chemical peel for you and determined the strength, depending on the type of peel, our skin care specialist will then apply the peel with gauze, a brush, or a cotton-tipped applicator. The applied peel may make your skin feel tight; you may also notice;
- stinging or tingling
as the ingredients in your peel work to dissolve your skin cells, there’ll come a certain point when the more sensitive skin underneath is affected. The tingling may start gently then intensify, or it may stay about the same the whole time. - Itching
Your skin may itch during your peel, which is normal. It’s usually only in small areas. An itch is a nervous system response to a stimulus, so it’s not surprising at all that during a chemical peel you may some itchy spots. Talk to your practitioner if you need to solve an itch! - Heat or cool
During the peel, you may feel warming or cooling of the skin. Either sensation is normal, though a feeling of warmth is more common than cool. The skin will respond to its ‘injury’ by sending blood and other cells to the area, causing redness and heat. - Tight skin
It’s normal during a chemical peel to have a taut sensation of the skin. Your skin is being stripped bare and will feel a bit tight. This taut feeling will resolve. We make sure to moisturise you well before you leave so you won’t feel dry. Hot and tight is entirely normal, however, and will resolve within 24-48 hours. - Peels are generally removed in three to five minutes after application, and we may apply cool compresses or lotion to help soothe the skin. Some peels remain on the skin for up to an hour; our team will review the specifics of your peel prior to performing any sort of treatment..
- A mask or moisturiser and sunscreen is then applied which will assist with the dryness.
Post Peel
- Your skin may peel and flake
Skin peeling is sort of the point of a chemical peel, but not all peels go deep enough to cause peeling in the days afterwards. Skin can take a few days to start to peel, so speak to your practitioner about what to expect. Deep peels may take up to two weeks to refresh the full face, so if you’ve had a deep peel, expect a lot of peeling or shedding. - Photosensitive skin
Your skin is so fresh; you can’t afford to get any UV rays near it, especially as it heals. UV damage can result in pigmentation problems, so be vigilant with sun protection, especially in reflective areas such as the car and near water or windows. - Sensitive skin
Your skin has been through an ordeal, so be gentle with it. You may find your skin is more sensitive to products you would typically use without an issue, so get advice from your practitioner on what to use post-peel.
Post Peel Care
After a chemical peel, patients often experience itching, dryness, redness and flaking skin. There are several steps you can take to promote better healing and improve your comfort. Immediately after your peel, you may find that ice packs or cool air provides a cooler, more comfortable feeling. However, it is important to keep your skin moist to prevent drying out.
You should moisturise your skin frequently to help it peel properly, and you may need to moisturise ten or more times per day. We may also recommend a cleanser specifically designed for peeling skin. As previously mentioned, you should avoid picking at the flaking skin.
Showers or baths that are too hot may also cause your skin to peel too quickly, so you should avoid taking overly hot baths or showers. Since your new skin will be fresh and new, it is important to protect it during the first few weeks.
Remember these 5 easy After-Care steps to make the most of your peel success;
- Avoid the sun and heat. Avoiding exposure to the sun is critical. You must avoid it completely until your skin is entirely healed, and even once it has healed, you should wear sunscreen at all times in order to protect the new layer of skin.
- Physical 20+ Sunscreen.Physical is better than chemical during this sensitive period. You can buy a tinted physical sunscreen so you can go to work without the white mask look.
- Skin Repair & Moisturise. Your skin will feel tight and dry, especially during flaking/shedding phase, a great basic moisturiser (without active ingredients) in the first 7 days is vital. Your practitioner will offer you the most compatible products for you.
- No peeling, scratching of flaking skin. Avoid this temptation, let the skin recover naturally as this will avoid irregular texture, possible damage and scarring.
- No treatments (except LED) for 2 weeks.No exfoliation for at least 7 days.
Products
The visible effects are noticed after one treatment. Therefore, it sometimes happens that patients discontinue therapy. This is a mistake, because only fully completed programs bring final results that will only require maintenance visits.
The usual number of treatments is 5 or 6. They are carried out at intervals of 7-30 days, depending on the acid used and skin type.
After completing the entire course of treatment, you can continue other therapies that will prolong the effect. To maintain the positive effects of chemical peels, after completing the course of treatment, you may perform maintenance treatments once every 4-6 weeks.

Are skin peels safe to use?
Yes, when done in clinic. We use a number of different peels that vary in their strength and combinations, that require differing aftercare and downtime. As skin peels are non-invasive, they do not break the skin, instead working chemically to produce gentle yet powerful results.

Will my skin peel hurt?
No. While you may feel a gentle heating sensation or some tingling depending on which peel you use and its strength, any side effects should subside within a few hours of your treatment.
What is Mono-Acid or Combi-Acid?
A mono-acid is a peel that only contains a single type of acid such as Lactic 30%, Glycolic 20%, Salicylic 30%. A combo-Acid peel is a peel that has a combination of acids that work together to create the end result, for example a Pigmentation Peel will have Salicylic Acid 2%, Azelaic Acid 14%.
What does a clinical level chemical peel treatment involve?
After we’ve discussed and chosen the best peel to achieve the results you want, we start by cleansing your face. We’ll then apply your peel, and may neutralise it afterwards, depending on the type of peel we’ve chosen. Your skin will then be cleansed again, and any necessary after-care products will be applied. We’ll let you know about the best way to care for your skin after the peel, including any products that may help maximise your results.
What does a clinical level chemical peel treatment involve?
Clinical level chemical peels help to improve the appearance of pigmentation and any sun damage, in addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, pore size and an overall reduction in congested skin and breakouts.
What’s the downtime after a clinical level chemical peel?
The post-peel application process can take 3 to 10 days depending on the type of chemical peel. Within 48 hours one can expect either light flaking or more substantial sheets of skin beginning to shed.
Can I do my own chemical peel at home?
When ‘at-home’ chemical peels go wrong the results can be disastrous. There is a lot of misconception surrounding acid peel solution strengths, and it is dangerous to use anything that claims to be an ‘at-home face peel’. Best to leave clinic level face peels to trained technicians.
Should I wear sunscreen after having my chemical peel?
Yes! No matter what time of year you choose to start treatment, you’ll need to swear by your sunscreen. It is important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. We recommend Mesoestetic Mesoprotech® for ultimate protection.
Can I wear makeup after having my chemical peel?
After your face peel, ensure you adhere strictly to your dermal technician’s post-care recommendations and avoid heavy makeup and ingredients that can irritate your skin, such as retinol. If you must apply makeup, use a mineral powder that won’t clog your pores, and make sure
your makeup applicators are clean and bacteria-free.
Are their contraindications for chemical peels?
Yes, there are a few which will prevent you from actually experiencing a clinic level chemical peel such as;
- Pregnancy or breast feeding
- Recent sunburn
- Allergies to any of the components of the formulation
- Treatment with isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the past 6 months
- Hydroquinone use in the past 3 months on the face
- Active bacterial, viral, fungal or herpes infection
- Autoimmune disease and / or chronic imbalances affecting the skin
- Recent chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy (clearance letter from your Dr will be required)
- Recent skin surgery
- History of keloids or hypertrophic scarring or extra colouring in your scars
- Open or partly open wounds
- Can’t stay out of the sun during healing period
